San Donato grove, Tuscany

The Grove

Welcome to San Donato.

Set in the hills above Florence at an altitude of 500 meters, this traditional Tuscan grove spans nearly nine acres with a southwest exposure overlooking the surrounding landscape.

San Donato is home to 617 olive trees, primarily Frantoio and Moraiolo, alongside Leccino, Pendolino, and Olivo Bianco. These native varieties grow in widely spaced, non-irrigated conditions typical of traditional hillside groves, producing oils shaped as much by terrain and climate as by cultivation.

San Donato grove restoration

Restoration

Abandoned Grove began caring for San Donato in 2010.

The grove's story is closely tied to Daniela and her late husband Bruno, who purchased the land with the intention of building a home and tending its olive trees. After Bruno's passing, the grove gradually fell out of care, becoming one of many traditional landscapes at risk of being lost.

What began as an effort to support the grove evolved into a long-term commitment to restore it and carry that care forward. Over time, the grove was brought back into balance, allowing the work Bruno had envisioned to continue through a wider community of care.
