FAQs

General Membership

We’ve studied the global industry and spoken to every corner of the network, from producers and tasters to scientists and logistics teams. We’ve concluded that this is the only model that protects quality, respects the natural limits of the harvest, and supports long-term regeneration. It meets every pillar: product integrity, environmental sustainability, and economic community support.

By tying memberships to real trees, we control all of these factors. Once all trees in a grove are assigned, enrollment closes.

Not in the usual sense. Memberships are seasonal and tied to a real olive tree. They renew annually to secure your tree and oil, but you’ll be notified beforehand and can cancel at any time. If you let go of your spot, your tree becomes available for someone else to adopt.

Yes, while trees are still available. To date, we’ve made available exactly 5,052 trees. Some members hold more than one, so once all trees have found a home, enrollment will close until a new grove is restored.

No. Every bottle is tied to a tree and a member. We don’t do retail. That’s how we preserve the integrity of the harvest.

Membership Tiers

Membership connects you to a living system, each grove a micro-community, each tree a point of connection. When all trees are spoken for, access to that grove closes. This model protects quality, ensures traceability, and preserves the natural cadence of the harvest.

As a member, you receive:

  • Expanded Olive Oil Access: Beyond your own tree's yield, enjoy Community Reserve allocations, special seasonal releases, and limited Founder’s Reserve offerings throughout the year.
  • Priority Event Invitations: Gain preferred access to exclusive member experiences, including curated harvest travel in Tuscany, intimate dinners, and tastings with renowned chefs across North America.
  • Preferred Partner Pricing: Enjoy early access and exclusive member pricing on select collaborations with like-minded companies.
  • Direct Access to Expert Knowledge: Our team of extra virgin olive oil specialists offers clear, honest insights that span culinary, chemical, scientific, and environmental expertise. We are globally recognized for our unfiltered truth and adhere to standards far exceeding the industry norm.

The Root tier is our entry level. It sustains a tree within the Community Reserve trees in the grove, though not one assigned by name, and gives you full access to the Abandoned Grove community. You’ll receive seasonal updates, special invitations, and the opportunity to apply your full fee toward an upgrade.

As a Tree Tier member, you are entrusted with a rescued olive tree. Your tree is photographed and geotagged, and you have the option to include a hand-crafted olive wood nameplate. Our team provides dedicated care for your tree. Each harvest from your specific grove yields two bottles of extra virgin olive oil. Furthermore, you receive full access to all member events and seasonal opportunities.

The Grove tier includes four rescued trees, each photographed and geotagged. These trees yield eight bottles per harvest and include a handcrafted olive wood nameplate placed in your grove. This tier is ideal for those who want to deepen their impact or share their oil with others.

The Grove Custodian tier is for those who sustain 20 or more trees. It includes personalized onboarding, dedicated concierge support, and deeper involvement in our seasonal work. This tier is often used for sharing with teams, clients, or family, and includes access to special allocations and curated experiences.

Yes. You can add trees anytime. Each tree is renewable annually and provides two bottles of oil. We can align renewal dates upon request.

Membership availability pauses until more groves are rejuvenated or more trees are planted. Once trees are spoken for, access closes across all tiers.

Your membership ends, and your trees are released. If there is availability in the future, we’d be happy to welcome you back.

Tree Assignments & Harvests

Yes. You keep your exact tree, with the same ID, name, and location, as long as your membership remains active.

You receive oil exclusively from your grove. While groves, not individual trees, produce oil, there is no outside blending. If your tree underproduces, the Community Reserve ensures you still receive your allocation.

Each year has a cutoff date before harvest. If you join before it, your membership includes oil from the current harvest. If after, you begin with the next harvest.

Our rejuvenated trees are divided into three categories to protect quality, support resilience, and sustain our mission:

  • 65% are assigned to active members at the Tree, Grove, and Grove Custodian tiers

  • 20% are held in the Community Reserve, a buffer used to stabilize yield, provide additional oil, and support aligned partners

  • 15% are available for our legacy Founder’s Reserve extra virgin olive oil

Once all trees have been assigned, enrollment will close until more groves are rescued. No demand-based scaling. No exceptions.

At Abandoned Grove, nature dictates our yield, and we prioritize quality above all else.

To support our members, we established the Community Reserve. This exclusive, member-only reserve is set aside from each harvest. It serves as a safety net during periods of lower-than-expected yields, allowing members to request additional oil throughout the year.

We never source olives externally or blend with outside oil to boost production.

If your tree underproduces due to seasonal conditions, we supplement from the same grove or from the Community Reserve to ensure your full two-bottle allocation.

We select trees for you based on the most viable areas within our rejuvenated groves. While we do our best to accommodate requests for a specific grove, please note that the final assignment depends on the location's viability. Regardless of the selection, you will receive full geolocation, a photo, and background information for the tree chosen for you.

Gifting

Gifting a tree is a one-year, non-renewing experience that counts towards our total grove's tree count. We handle everything, including a personalized message, digital certificate, extra virgin olive oil, and a handcrafted olive wood nameplate.

They receive two bottles of extra-virgin olive oil from the grove’s harvest, a digital certificate, and a handcrafted olive wood nameplate placed on their tree. Full membership access is included, which allows them to purchase additional oil and receive invitations to exclusive events and travel opportunities.

You choose the notification date. On that day, the recipient will receive a digital message inviting them to claim their tree and access Abandoned Grove. Suppose you prefer to hand it in person. In that case, a downloadable card is available as soon as you place the order, allowing the recipient to activate it immediately if they choose.

Gifts made anytime before December 31 qualify for the latest harvest. We harvest between mid-October and November, and oil is typically delivered early in the new year. That said, the recipient can choose to receive their oil later in the year if they prefer. The key is ordering by December 31 to secure that year’s harvest.

If neither giver nor recipient renews, the tree is released back to the community and made available to others.

No problem. The gift is added as a one-time tree for that harvest year. Their existing membership stays active and unchanged.

Yes. For corporate, event, or large gifting needs, please reach out directly. We offer dedicated Grove Custodian tier options for groups and teams.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil & Delivery

We harvest between mid-October and early November.

All grove-specific oils, including those from gifted trees, are usually airshipped at the beginning of the year, once all rescued groves have been harvested and tested.

Founder's Reserve, as an early harvest and smaller selection, ships earlier, typically late November to early December.

Starting in 2026, Community Reserve allocations will be delivered quarterly.

Each tree yields two bottles per year, tied to a specific grove. Originally, one bottle was donated to the grove’s community, but now both are yours to keep. No blending. No outsourcing.

The Community Reserve is a pool of trees held aside (roughly 20% of our total) to:

  • Provide additional oil to members throughout the year
  • Support chefs, educators, and aligned voices
  • Protect against low-yield years.

Founder’s Reserve is an early-harvest selection from subsections of our rejuvenated groves by Fil Bucchino. It is sold by the case of 6 and is available to all members while supplies last. Founder’s Reserve is the oil that gave birth to this mission, and this harvest will be its 16th edition.

Our practices exceed organic standards, focusing on full biodiversity restoration, regenerative soil health, and non-invasive integrated pest management. While our groves are not certified organic, all are farmed with respect to the ecosystem and undergo rigorous testing for chemical residue.

Filtration is paramount to the longevity of our oil, influencing both its sensory and chemical profile. Since day one, it's been a core practice. We double filter all oils immediately after transformation to eliminate sediment and moisture. This process enhances stability and shelf life without compromising the oil's distinct flavour or aroma. As a general guideline, we strongly advise against using unfiltered oils.

Keep it in a cool, dark place, away from heat and sunlight. Always close the bottle again after usage.
