General

Abandoned Grove is a mission-driven company that rescues abandoned olive groves to produce sustainable, premium, and grove-specific extra virgin olive oil to improve lives and protect the planet. Exceptional extra virgin olive oil is the vehicle to drive change.

Since our beginning, Abandoned Grove has remained the only extra virgin olive oil crafted with your kitchen and the planet in mind. We exclusively serve a dedicated community of stakeholders who share our values, prioritizing quality over quantity. Our production is intentionally limited; each grove is cultivated with respect to its natural tree count and yield, ensuring both sustainability, authenticity and world class quality in every bottle.

We’ve never retailed, knowing that today’s olive oil business models can’t ensure sustainability for the producer or the highest quality for the customer. Our oils are crafted by caring farmers, master millers, and professional tasters who bring their passion to each bottle, producing oils that uniquely reflect the grove, season, and community. This dedication is overseen by world-renowned experts who ensure that each bottle is a true embodiment of nature’s craft.

Both Founders Reserve and One Tree One Bottle extra virgin olive oils are derived from groves that Abandoned Grove has rejuvenated and continues to sustain. They are limited in production, with quantities tied directly to the number of trees within each grove, unlike many other oils on the market, including those labeled as "single estate." Both oils undergo AG’s renowed and meticulous quality control in production, testing, and transport.

The key distinction between Founders Reserve and OTOB lies in their grove-specific nature. OTOB is strictly tied to a single tree within a specific grove, while Founders Reserve is a blend of olives from Abandoned Grove’s various rejuvenated groves.

  • One Tree One Bottle is limited in a unique way: each bottle comes from a specific tree, creating a one-of-a-kind field blend from a specific single rejuvenated grove. The flavor and sensory experience varies based on the tree varietal composition of that grove. With each bottle purchased, a second is donated to the grove’s community, making OTOB a blend of quality and social impact. The production is limited by the natural count and yield of individual trees within the grove.
  • Founders Reserve is a curated blend of the three Tuscan historic cultivars (Moraiolo, Frantoio and Leccino) from the rejuvenated groves under our care, limited in production to between 1,500 and 3,000 bottles per year, depending on the harvest. It’s personally curated by founder Fil Bucchino in his yearly attempt to recreate and share his life-changing experience with premium olive oil.

Abandoned Grove has rejuvenated over 5,052 trees, sustained 64 acres of olive groves, involved 56 social integration participants, completed 14 successful premium harvests, and benefited 13 local businesses and artisans.

Yes, with One Tree One Bottle you can choose a grove, follow its story, and enjoy the rewards of your support.

Abandoned Grove respects the tree count of each of our rejuvenated groves and the natural output of each tree, which is, on average, about 2 bottles per tree per year, as all of our extra virgins are limited in production by nature.

We encourage conversation, and our community members have a direct line of communication with the Abandoned Grove team and community. Alternatively, subscribe to our newsletter for harvest updates, event notifications, education, and information on the latest limited releases.

Our present groves are in the hills surrounding Florence, Italy about 3-5 km from the city center. We currently working on expanding the mission to other regions and countries. Explore our interactive grove map

One Tree One Bottle

One Tree, One Bottle is an initiative rooted in respect for the natural output of a Tuscan olive tree, typically yielding two bottles of extra virgin olive oil per harvest.

Your purchase supports a tree to produce one exceptional bottle of micro-regional and grove-specific premium extra virgin olive oil for you and another bottle that stays with the local producer to help foster a thriving ecosystem that supports community, countering grove abandonment and preserving our environment for future generations.

This initiative ensures the highest quality extra virgin olive oil and sustainable production and benefits local farmers.

After the harvest, OTOB oil is bottled at the source, preserved under nitrogen, and shipped with Abandoned Grove’s meticulous care to ensure peak quality. You can expect your oil to arrive around the start of the new year.

Please check your inbox or our website for ordering deadlines to secure oil from this harvest. Since production is limited to the number of trees, any orders placed after the cutoff will only be fulfilled if the producer releases additional oil from their half of the harvest. Otherwise, orders will be reserved for the following season’s harvest.

One Tree One Bottle (OTOB) olive oil is more expensive due to the unique care, social impact, and environmental sustainability involved in its production. Each bottle is tied to a specific tree within a rejuvenated grove, with production limited by the natural yield of these trees—no oil is sourced externally. The process involves meticulous care, from tree to bottle, to produce premium, grove-specific olive oil.

Additionally, a significant portion of the proceeds directly supports our No Grove Abandoned mission to revive and sustain olive groves. For every dollar spent, approximately 49 cents goes back to the community, improving the quality of the land and supporting local economies. This initiative helps combat environmental issues like biodiversity loss and desertification while ensuring that local communities benefit from sustainable agriculture. Plus, with each OTOB bottle sold, a second bottle is donated to the grove’s community, further helping to sustain both the community and the grove itself.

In short, the higher cost reflects not only the premium quality of the oil but also the broader mission to restore abandoned groves, support communities, and protect the environment.

The One Tree One Bottle (OTOB) program is unique because each bottle comes from a tree within a specific grove. Each grove’s unique microclimate, including differences in soil, elevation, and weather patterns, directly impacts the oil’s profile. Each OTOB bottle reflects the unique character of its grove, creating a truly one-of-a-kind olive oil experience while supporting a meaningful mission of sustainability and rejuvenation.

The number at the top of the OTOB (One Tree One Bottle) cards represents the number of trees that have been sustained in the grove. This signifies the specific trees that are part of the sustainability efforts, showing how many trees have been rejuvenated and maintained through your support. Each card highlights the ongoing mission of preserving and caring for these trees, ensuring that they continue to thrive for future harvests.

Founders Reserve

Founders Reserve and OTOB are both crafted to the highest standards, undergoing meticulous quality control in production, testing, and transport (see Our Process). The question of which is "better" depends on individual taste.

Founders Reserve is a curated blend from multiple rejuvenated groves, designed to deliver a balanced flavor profile using Tuscany’s three historic olive cultivars. With limited production (1,500–3,000 bottles annually), it’s versatile and refined, making it ideal for various dishes.

OTOB (One Tree One Bottle) offers a more unique, single-grove experience, with each bottle tied to a specific tree, providing a rare and distinctive flavour.

Quantities of Founders Reserve vary throughout the harvest season. On average, between 1,500 and 3,000 bottles are produced yearly, but the exact amount depends on the season’s yield. Pre-orders are released at three to four different points during the harvest as we monitor both quantity and pricing, allowing us to better estimate the final production.

To stay updated on availability, we recommend signing up for our mailing list. Subscribers receive notifications first and have the earliest opportunity to secure a case. Occasionally, if the harvest is more abundant than expected, limited quantities may be made available online for general access after mailing list notifications. This has only happened three times in the last decade.
